Decoration icon design that I created for my Communication Design I course.
This was my first communication design project. The goal of the project was to find a decoration around the Summit Neighborhood, where my college, The College of Visual Arts, is located, in order to study it and recreate it as an icon.
We started out with a sketch and then recreated the decoration in pen and ink using circles and squares in order to study the mathematical proportions. The goal was to be able to explain the sound mathematical sense behind it the decoration.
The decoration that I chose had one big circle that enveloped four different spirals that met in the center on the edge of an inner circle. This project was a challenging because of the spirals involved. The design was very complicated and required precise placement in order to achieve the curves needed using just circles and squares. Unfortunately, I didn’t figure out until after the project was due, thanks to my math course, that the spirals could be more easily recreated using the golden ratio.
